Semantic search with local embeddings and Munito AI

Search short passages with local sentence embeddings, then answer from the retrieved sources with a Munito AI chat model.

Find passages by meaning with a local embedding model, then send the best matches to Munito AI for an answer. Munito AI has no embeddings or reranking endpoint. This recipe runs embeddings and retrieval on your machine; the chat request uses the Munito AI EU host.

Complete script

The example uses four short, fictional product passages. Set MUNITO_API_KEY to your console key. Save this script as semantic_search.py:

import os
import sys

    }, indent=2))

Run the script:

uv run --with openai --with pydantic --with sentence-transformers semantic_search.py

The first run downloads the embedding model. The model then computes the vectors locally. The expected answer cites data-export and describes the CSV export. The source check rejects unknown identifiers; review the answer against the cited passages to check its accuracy.

Use your own documents

  1. Extract page text with PDF to Markdown.
  2. Split the text into short passages that fit the embedding model's token limit.
  3. Keep a document identifier and a page identifier with each passage.
  4. Filter documents by the current user's access rights before retrieval.
  5. Save the vectors in your own index and update them when the source changes.

This English embedding model truncates inputs beyond 256 word pieces by default. The script checks the token length to prevent silent truncation. For another language or domain, evaluate an appropriate embedding model on representative queries. See the model card and Sentence Transformers guide.

Cosine similarity orders the results. It is not a probability that a passage answers the question. Measure retrieval quality and unanswered questions before you choose a rejection threshold.

Region and cost

The embeddings and index stay on the machine that runs the script. Only the question and retrieved passages enter the chat request. Use an EU machine for the local steps when your application requires EU processing throughout. Munito AI bills the chat input and output tokens; your local compute has a separate cost. See Pricing, Regions, and Data privacy.
